Bend it Like Beckham

I love that movie...pretty much everything about it.  I love the directing and editing jobs; I love the story line; I love the infusion of cultures with more than a touch of Bollywood thrown in; I love the character development of a young girl figuring out who she is and what she wants; I love the music; I love the relationship between the girls, and the slow-building romance between Jess and Joe; I love how the parents of both girls are featured and how much humour they bring to the story (especially the mother role played by Juliet Stevenson, who I thought was terrific); I love the ending....  You name it, I love pretty much everything about that movie.  It doesn't hurt that Jonathan Rhy Meyers is both lovely to look at and, in my opinion, a very good actor (though this is the only thing I've seen him act in).  Anyway, Bend It Like Beckham is one of my all-time favourites and I wish there were move movies like it.

Can you tell that I watched last weekend?  It kept me up far too late one night, but I went to sleep smiling!

I'm a big fan of the more innocent types of movies.  Amongst my favourite movies, in addition to Bend it Like Beckham, are movies such as When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, Pride and Prejudice (the Keira Knightly/Matthew McFadden version in this instance, though I also love the BBC version), The Decoy Bride, Notting Hill, Pretty Woman, the first Twilight movie (not so much the others), The Wedding Planner, Hitch, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and so on.  I guess, at heart, I'm a rom-com movie lover.

Any other suggestions?  A friend just suggested Hannah and her Sisters but I confess I've never even heard of it...and I am further obliged to confess that I might be predisposed to not like it because I'm not a huge Woody Allen fan.

So...what can you suggest to me for this weekend's viewing pleasure??!!

P.S.  I also love some musicals, such as Hairspray, the recent Les Miserables, Pitch Perfect, etc...love listening to good music!

PP.S.  Ooo, I forgot...I loved Bridget Jones' Diary, too!

  2. HI Ruth,
I'm not at all a movie buff but once I put my mind to it, I could come up with two movies of a lighter, romantic type nature that I recall liking: "Lars and the Real Girl" and "Me and You and Everybody We Know." Happy watching!

  6. I am not at all surprised that we share so many favourite movies in common. I've watched Notting Hill and Bend it Like Beckham too many times likely. One of my most favourites though would have to be "Love Actually". Great for the holidays.

  7. No, not surprising at all, Charity! And they're totally awesome movies, IMHO!!

I'll have to check out 'Love Actually' finally...for some reason, I've avoided it, though I've heard good things about it...not sure what's up with that. I'll keep you posted!
