'Reading' Out Loud

A couple of weeks ago, it was pretty quiet, so I went to check out what everyone was doing.  Here's what I saw in our library:

Until about two weeks ago (when these pictures were taken), I don't think Seth had a hot clue (my bad!) as to what on earth letters were!  So now, when I'm reading out loud to the kids, I make sure that Seth is on my lap for at least part of that time, and I use my finger to follow the words that I am reading...and occasionally I will point out a letter that he knows.

In the picture below, you can see Seth's finger on the page, and his mouth open as he verbalizes some kind of made-up 'story' to go along with the pictures.  This was the first time I've seen/heard him do this and it made me think that he's starting to understand the relevance of letters to books and reading.  YAY!!

And then, a few minutes later...

I love this picture!

  1. I just LOVE walking in to find a child sitting with a book. Last week during rest time, I popped in to remind Kitch to try to sleep for a while, and found him lying on his back in bed, propped up, with a book open, and his feet crossed and resting on a stack of books at the foot of the bed. Awesome. It's also so much fun to see them begin to comprehend "academic" knowledge - seeing our Luton learn about numbers and counting over the summer was delightful, and hearing Lil begin to shout out "Three! Eight!" when she sees written numbers makes me smile :)

  2. I absolutely love listening to the boys reading... I love that they love books and stories! Seeing Lizzie and Seth curled up, smiling and reading is awesome! A

  3. That's fabulous!
We often sneak into Kaitlyn's room (she's 2) late at night, to find her quietly sitting "reading" books to herself. I thought about taking the books out of her room, in the name of her getting some sleep, but I can't do it- seems counter-intuitive to me, so we just let our night owl read away.
I love the picture of Seth reading to Lizzie.
