Hair...A Single Ponytail At Last.

Below is a picture of Lizzie's hair from September of last year...it was so short and sparse.  There was next to nothing for me to even run my fingers through (and this was already considerably thicker than when she first came home).

Fast forward a year to these days.  Her 'au natural' hair is very tightly curled and contracts so much that it still looks quite short...

But, as you can see from the picture below, which was taken about a month ago after I finished combing through her hair (can you see the last of the conditioner still in it?), it's become very, very thick.  A year ago there was hardly anything to run my hands through...now I can't get my fingers through it!

Last week, one of Lizzie's wishes finally came true because her hair was long enough to gather it all into a single ponytail.  She looked adorable and, despite not being very smiley in the pictures, she was hopping around with glee after taking a look at herself in the mirror.  Her hair is thick and long and lustrous now...truly it is amazing what a little time and nutrition can do.

  4. I know I'm biased, Jill, but isn't she just spectacular?? In that last picture, I can see a bit of what I think she's going to look like when she's an adult...between her beautiful face and her totally sparkly personality, I think she's going to be a knock-out!

    Thanks. Ruth

  7. Beautifully done Ruth! Lizzie is absolutely beautiful. What type of hair products do you use? I have not found anything yet that I love for Simele.
And yes, I agree stroll through costco! You did good Mamma!
    Take care,

  8. Thanks Kelly - you're sweet. :)

Re: products, I use a line of organic olive oil products that have shampoo, conditioner and a styling/shining foam. If I'm lucky I can find them at Walmart (and then I buy a bunch)...it's cheaper there than elsewhere but they don't always carry it.

I only wash her hair every 7-10 days. I put the conditioner in her hair at least every other day between washes, and after shampooing (and I never wash it out).

And I use pure coconut oil on her hair about 2x/week...and on her body.

When I'm combing out her hair after a shower, I use a product (not organic but awesome for tangles) called Better Braids, which her hair stylist told me about.

Oh, and she wears a satin sleep cap at night to help with tangling and matting.

I hope something in there helps!

  12. Well, isn't that just the sweetest! Your story reminds me of another hair story in one of the Anna Hibiscus books we just read... the trials and beauty of hair routines! You may have read that series already - if you haven't, I think the books are really lovely - you'd have to preview them yourself to see if they would be a good fit for your kiddies. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6201557-anna-hibiscus
