It is set in post WWII Guernsey so that part is obviously serious content but the narrative surrounding it is so worth it and uplifting. I tried reading Yann Martel's book "Self" a couple of years ago and I just couldn't get going with it. Also, I was in Cuba and it was the only book I brought, having so much faith that I would like it, and anyway, always bring more than one book to Cuba because there is nowhere to buy another one!!
